Feminism Statistics with Immigration

According to statistics Canada 16,136,925 women immigrated to Canada in 2006 and a total of 15,475,970 men immigrated to Canada in 2006. These statistics found on Statistics Canada show that more women immigrated to Canada over the last few years than men. Is there reasoning behind this? I personally think that more women are immigrating because they are beginning to realize that they can get a future in Canada and that they can run their own lives. In any society men seem to always have this advantage over women and I think that it is beginning to get noticed that women can do just as many things as men and live a life of power to. In some countries it may seem that women are meant to stay at home and feed the children and look after everything around the house. Now women are breaking the norm and taking control by running their own lives. For a lot of these women coming to Canada means a new beginning, a place to start fresh and become who they really want to be. I think to a degree this can be recognized as a form of feminism. These women are most likely not all extreme feminists but by choosing to take control and supporting other women to do the same I do think to a degree they are supporting a form of feminism.
I decided that I wanted to know what all these women coming into Canada were doing here to make a living. And this is when I discovered that Canada had three types of visas for women immigrating. One was the work visa, another was the student visa and the last one was the stripper visa. Canada was taking women from foreign countries into our society on what was called a stripper visa. This visa allowed women to come to Canada on the regards that they would be strippers which provided Canada with this exotic theme drawing more attention to clubs and other places these females worked. The site listed below is a site that explains this stripper visa a little bit more. Now that the visa no longer exists maybe numbers for the 2011 census for immigration will go down for women and maybe equal out with the mens statistics.

  1. Wow, at first I was shocked to know that more women than men immigrated to Canada. I think it is great that women are immigrating, and you are right it is a form of feminism. It is great that women are stepping up and fulfilling roles that men can do. Women deserve to be treated as equals. When you listed that women immigrated to Canada because of work via, student visa and stripper visa, I immediately felt that work and student visa are great and stripper visa is terrible. I am glad that the stripper visa is gone, and that is something that should have never existed.

  2. I was watching a film about the International Women's Conference and this one woman told her story of being offered a job in another country then when she landed her "employer" took her passport and forced her into the sex trade. It is very hard to trust people when you hear so many stories of people being exploited. I worry that these women who applied for the "stripper visa" were exploited and have had to lead very difficult lives because of it. I wish that the government would check up on recent immigrants to make sure that they are doing well and are not being exploited.

  3. I believe women shouldn't be "materialize" and it is sad that stripper visa has expolited many women who wish to have "better life" when they come to Canada. I am glad that the stripper visa is no longer exist and I hope women who immigrant to Canada in the furute will be success.

  4. I agree. I think more Women are immigrating to Canada because here, they are more free to do what they want without control. They also have justice on men who take advantage of them, and have rights and respect here in Canada. Women are breaking the homemaker role by working in more jobs, and doing jobs that used to be seen as men only doing them. Women are definitely strong individuals who are taking action and are fighting hard to break the discrimination that just because we are Women, we are weaker individuals. This is now not a true statement, because we can do anything men can do. Great post!
