Re visiting Neo-conservatism

According to Mullaly on page 89 of the text book (The new structural social Work), Neo conservatism believes that in a society there is freedom from government coercion, individualism, and inequality. Neoconservatives believe in tradition and following the plan laid down for them. So, imagine being an immigrant coming into Canada for the first time and having to decide what view on society you fit in best with. Well right away most immigrants would realize that Neo-conservatism is not what suites them best. Most of the time new immigrants don’t come over with family. That breaks tradition. A lot of the time it is a single female coming. That breaks tradition. It seems like everything a new immigrant does will somehow break tradition or upset the neoconservative way of living. I can only imagine what it would be like for me if I was an immigrant who just came into a completely new society and had to live in this neoconservative world even though half the things I was partaking in would be breaking the traditional standards of this new society.
This is a hard process for any immigrant to go through. Before anyone comes to Canada I think that all political parties out there should make themselves known to immigrants. This can help the new comer to decide what suites him or her best and lets them fit in with a group of people like themselves. If this was available for immigrants I think there would be a lot less confusion and it would help immigrants fit into our already existing society better.

  1. I did not realize that when immigrants come to Canada, at first they mainly come alone. I could not imagine immigrating to a country, and leaving my family first. I mean someone has to do it, but wow, what a life change and to make alone. Life for the fist immigrant is a drastic change, and the person who immigrants first has no support right there with them. They have to take on the responsibility of coming to a new country, filling out the paper work, learning the new city, preparing the home for the family that will be coming and dealing with all of the judgments and comments they receive.

Then there is the fact, that when you move to a new country chances are you have moved into a new ideology. Being an immigrant under the neoconservative government, is not very beneficial, as we have learned in class. Neoconservatives are all about tradition, and unfortunately many immigrants have a different tradition than the "Canadian tradition". Your blog definitely makes me realize that, all though families generally do end up moving to a country, it is not always at the same time. therefore, when the mother for example, comes to Canada she is not being very traditional.

  2. I totally agree with you, when you say if possible all political parties should make themselves known so that immigrants can prepare themselves ahead of time. When i first got here, i was quite confused with the political philosophies because where I came from there is no room for such debates. To be honest with you i didn’t even know about all the different ideologies. However im so glad the Canadian government is liberal because the Neo conservatives are not very friendly with immigrants.

  3. I thik political parties should make themselves knwon to immigrants too. However, I feel like immigrants are not concerned by the political parties because some of them cannot vote( you have to be Canadian citizen in order to get the voting right). I think political parties should do more concerns to immigrants even they cannot vote(yet)

But in my point of view, neoconservatism definitly not a great ideology for immigrants because I believe getting help from others is important to start a new life in Canada.
